Festival of the Freshwater Squid

Tonight, I made myself a hat, using a pattern that goosezilla made, and embellishing it a little.

I got a little carried away, and now it’s nearly four am and I’m out of steam and very nearly out of words. Amy burst out laughing when she saw me wearing it, and because she is overtired as well, we’ve committed to having some sort of wheelchair jousting match while wearing special hats. More on this development as it proceeds.

G’nite!

I have extra material, I’ll make you one. 🙂

This? Is just one of the many reasons why you are Awesome. And why I follow your stuff here.

    cheers,
    Phil

      Thank you! <3

I want one, and I want a tiny baby sized one for my evil squid minion. Make it happen and I will pay you with Sweet and Hot Salsa from Brennan’s.

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 5:37 pm

I can make this happen. Oh, sweet and hot salsa, you WILL be mine!

  3. keebler138 December 29, 2008 at 4:44 pm

    So cute!

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 5:38 pm

      Thanks! <3

  4. goosezilla December 29, 2008 at 4:49 pm

    XD

This has to be the best version of the squid hat ever made! Excellent!

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 5:40 pm

      Re: XD

All I added was some felt and some liquid stitch. Where on EARTH did you find 35mm craft eyes? 20mm were the absolute largest I could find.

      1. goosezilla December 29, 2008 at 11:55 pm

        re:

I got them off of Ebay a few years ago. I also haven’t had luck finding another batch of the things. If you need some I’ve got extra pairs though.

Also… If you want extra fancy giant eyes you can’t lose with Van Dykes! http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/category/glass-eyes

        1. admin December 30, 2008 at 2:21 am

Oh man, reptile eyes from Van Dykes might be the winner if I make myself a cthulhu variant of this hat. Freaking sweet!

I quite like my workaround on this one, adding the larger felt circles to emphasize the eyes–bigger eyes definitely equals more cute when it comes to cartoonish hats.

  5. storm_dancer December 29, 2008 at 5:44 pm

When will the squid hats be for sale? Because I NEED one for my Dalmuti set. SRSLY.

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Sale, schmale. I didn’t make the pattern, so I wouldn’t feel right about profiting off of a friend’s work. But I shooould have enough extra material to make you one. 🙂

      1. storm_dancer December 29, 2008 at 7:15 pm

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! Let me know if I need to provide you with any measurements (HUR HUR) and if I can reimburse you for materials, at least!

        YAY! THANK YOU!

        1. admin December 29, 2008 at 7:26 pm

The hatband is ~22inches around, and I cut it with the stretch of the fabric so it should expand to fit any adult head. 🙂 The material, I bought for this hat, I just bought way too much! How about, if we end up in the same town at some point in the future, you buy me a drink?

          1. storm_dancer December 29, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Damn yeah! And we’ll wear our squid hats!

          2. admin December 29, 2008 at 7:37 pm

            Make it so.

  6. g33kgrrl December 29, 2008 at 6:04 pm

    Title! Excellent.

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 6:06 pm

gave me City of Saints & Madmen–the way VanderMeer talks about cephalopods is inspired!

      1. g33kgrrl December 29, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Nice! Did you read the sequel? Definitely do. VanderMeer’s one of my favorite authors. Also, why I feel completely justified being afraid of fungus.

        1. admin December 29, 2008 at 6:18 pm

I haven’t yet, but I definitely intend to read it. I have *never* trusted mushrooms and now I know why.

          1. g33kgrrl December 29, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Read it soon! The next one is coming out this fall!

          2. admin December 29, 2008 at 7:27 pm

I should have no problem getting caught up before then. I just got a stack of books for cthulhumas, so I really feel I should read them before I justify YET ANOTHER book purchase!

  7. hallucinas December 29, 2008 at 8:07 pm

as a non-squid-fan, I have to say, that is a bitchin hat!

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 8:13 pm

      Thank you!

  8. mschilepepper December 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm

    God, you’re weird. 😛

Archie McPhee has some big ol’ eyes that are meant for taxidermy, but they might work for your squidly purposes.

There’s a wheelchair just sitting at my house, left over from Mom’s crip phase after her surgery. Just sayin’.

    1. admin December 30, 2008 at 2:22 am

Would your mom mind if her wheelchair got put to battling purposes?

      1. mschilepepper December 30, 2008 at 3:31 am

Not if she doesn’t know about it beforehand! Beg forgiveness, don’t ask permission — that’s my motto.

  9. suspiciouskay December 29, 2008 at 1:52 pm

    See… now… I wish I could do that. Because that’s awesome.

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 5:35 pm

It was really pretty easy. 🙂

  10. watchout5 December 29, 2008 at 4:29 pm

That hat is full of win

    just full of it

    1. admin December 29, 2008 at 5:38 pm

      Thank you!

          2. ex_hallways December 29, 2008 at 7:31 pm

peee esss: i created a fan page for you on facebook. im adding you as an admin like i did for my writer friend Maggie Stiefvater so you can feel free to edit it anyhow you wish. <3

          3. admin December 29, 2008 at 7:39 pm

If that isn’t setting me up for disappointment, I don’t know what is. Three years from now, it’ll be you and my mom waving little ‘Wee, Mellzah!’ flags. 😉

          4. ex_hallways December 29, 2008 at 7:43 pm

its just for fun. my friend Rochelle has one that her friend set up just because she loves her. thats why i set up yours. 😀 im a fan of being your friend 😀

  12. ryanlion December 31, 2008 at 12:16 am

    That’s a fantastic hat!
I’d totally buy one, I’d buy two, I have a friend who is afraid of squid, it’d be a perfect gift for his wife!

If you decide to make any to sell, let me know!

  13. smacksaw January 1, 2009 at 8:58 am

    I have the same shirt.

    That is all.

    1. admin January 1, 2009 at 7:33 pm

I call SHENANIGANS. I got that shirt from a Delia*s catalog when I was sixteen. 😛
