Got my hurrs did

As of yesterday, it had been a year and a half since my last haircut, and, in the immortal words of Popeye, I’d had all I can stands and I can’t stands no more! It was a million and three different lengths, the ends were scraggly and dry and gross and no amount of conditioner, savage beatings with a hot iron, or prayer could make them look presentable. It was getting to the point where I would catch my hand inching toward my head whenever I was holding scissors, and to save myself a Britney Spears moment AND to celebrate hitting a rather significant weight loss target, I found myself in the cheap-o salon next to the great wall mall, which advertised men’s haircuts for $8, women’s for $11+.

Mine ended up being $13, which was a pretty damn good deal, given that I’m pleased enough with the cut even though the stylist and I could hardly understand one another save for the interrogation about what’s wrong with me that my hair is so thin. Yes, I know. I’m fat where people want to be thin and thin where people would prefer volume. I’m a walking, talking, breathing, shitting contradiction, and no, I have NO IDEA why my hair is so thin and neither does the battery of doctors I’ve visited, but it IS an excellent way to make me cry if you’re looking for a way to get in a dig. Just tell me I’m looking a little bald and that maybe Donald Trump could give me a tip or two. I’ll cry like a bitch.

Hey look, I don’t have scraggly ends hanging off my balding head down to my saggy boobs anymore!

When I started typing this post, I realized a picture would probably come in handy to illustrate my point so, hey, bathroom-cam! I couldn’t get a nonblurry one as my body is currently riddled with so much caffeine that it’s difficult to even type. Euphoria without the unsightly track marks!

Yesterday I finished up all of my Christmas gift-wrapping–Jason and I are having our own Pre-Christmas today as he flies out tomorrow to spend the holiday with family. I am hoping he likes what I’ve picked out, but if not, we’ll take it all back and buy him his body weight in socks.

I braved the mall on Monday in order to pick out some final gifts, and while I was absolutely in the foulest of foul moods when I left work, I took it out on NO ONE (I especially strive to be extra-nice to retail staff as I know how soul-crushing this time of year can be, with angry, entitled people screaming at you because you had the audacity to sell out of the product they’d come to buy and don’t you know they’ll DIE without it?!) and was actually jollied considerably. A woman at the post office complimented my santa suit manicure (pics to come) and thought it was professionally done, which is really the best sort of compliment. An employee at one store I visited exclaimed that she could not believe how polite I was and that she wished all of her customers could be like me. That’s right. I can be polite. I know it comes into question sometimes.

Of course, just before I left the mall, an employee came rushing into the store I was in and announced “Oh god, there’s another fight going on. Security has been called but you might want to wait in here for a while.” Nice, people. Way to be quality humans, fighting at a mall. For fuck’s sake!

Gah.. The women in my family develop thinning hair to the point of balding in older age.. Mine has just started down this process and I see my mom has it bad and my grandmother did resort to trying wigs later in life.. My aunt mumbled to me to try something or other but I didn’t catch it.. I think I’m going to resort to asking around.. If you hear anything let me know :p ( adopted.. Just met these folks over the last few years)

I meant her attitude, course, not the cut!

Apparently mine is not the sort of hair loss that lady Rogaine would fix. I’ve tried Nioxin and haven’t had any results. My thyroid tested low so I was on meds for a while but I’ve been tested again since and have fallen in the normal range. “They” say that some of the negative side effects of PCOS can be regulated through weight loss, so that’s what I’m trying now. I’m kind of desperate to at least keep what I’ve got even if it never gets thicker.

I hear ya there.. I wasn’t worried about it until I started to notice ( recently) that my own head of hair was thinning too.. Oh i think Nioxin was what my aunt mentioned..

Are people just more violent in Seattle? I don’t remember this happening in Indiana or Tennessee where I lived most of my life. I love the haircut, btw!

    1. admin December 22, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Maybe just in the area I live in, most people in Seattle are more passive-aggressive than aggressive-aggressive.

  3. ghost_light December 22, 2010 at 9:43 pm

    Your haircut looks great!

I know what you mean about retail at Christmas time. The last Christmas Eve I worked at the bookstore I nearly lost my mind. Apparently it was decided the way to get a salesclerk’s attention was to suddenly jump in front of them and begin talking at full speed.

    1. admin December 22, 2010 at 9:46 pm

When I worked at Guitar Center, our hours were 7am until whenever customers felt like leaving. Often this meant not actually closing the store until past midnight because ONE salesguy couldn’t close ONE customer while the rest of us stood around and twiddled our thumbs. It was torture.

    Was this Southcenter by chance?

    1. admin December 22, 2010 at 9:47 pm

      DING DING DING

Apparently there have been two shootings there, too!

      1. whobyfire78 December 22, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Oh Southcenter…you put the (y)uk in Tukwila.

I do NOT miss waiting for the 150 bus across the street from there. Every day I was guaranteed to either:

        1. Be stuck standing next to a mentally disabled person that smelled like a public toilet; or

        2. Be stuck standing next to gang-bangers who smelled like “game” (stale cigarillos and hairspray)

BTW, your facial expression in that pic perfectly fits the title of this post. Girl, mmmhmm, oh no you di’int.

        1. admin December 22, 2010 at 9:56 pm

They actually rebuilt Southcenter and it’s pretty nice, a far cry from what it used to be. If only they could chase out the festering human scum…

          1. whobyfire78 December 22, 2010 at 9:58 pm

Ahh, ok. You know me, if I can find a way to bash Seattle and it’s at least halfway rooted in truth, I gots to take it.

(sorry to those of you there who aren’t pretentious douchewads)

          2. admin December 22, 2010 at 9:59 pm

hahaha I’m not offended, I like taking cheap shots, too. My target is typically Philly.

I also strive to be nice to retail worker, and restaurant workers, too. It builds bad karma juju if you’re snotty. I’ve been there, it SUCKS.

Hair looks super-cute! As for the thinning hair thing, have you had any sort of endocrine checkup? Stress makes you produce more testosterone, and elevated levels of testosterone can make your hair fall out. More men go bald than women, precisely because they’re more testosteroney to start with.

Mom had this issue a few years back. Her hair guy told her to leave it the hell alone for the most part. Wash it as infrequently as possible, no hair dryer, no curling iron, and certainly no flat irons. Only use gentle pins or ponytail holders or whatever, if you have to put it up, and don’t scrape it back too hard when you do. It worked for her; after about a year of that, hers had come back a lot. I think she also used Rogaine for a while, and it seemed to help.

    1. admin December 22, 2010 at 11:46 pm

I’m sure I’ve had an endocrine checkup at one point or another but it couldn’t hurt to get more testing, I’d really like to get this figured out. I could be gentler with my hair, but it’s stuff that’s difficult to change–on days that I exercise, I’m typically washing it twice a day because I can’t for the life of me get up early enough in the morning to work out before work, and then I don’t want to leave the house with sopping wet hair so the blowdryer gets used more often than I’d like. I try to be a little conscientious–if I’m not going anywhere, I will let my hair air dry. The flat iron only gets used on special occasions and only at the ends as a last resort. I rarely put my hair up (even if only because doing so gives me awful headaches). I dunno, I wish there was a magic solution.

      1. mschilepepper December 22, 2010 at 11:53 pm

Yeah, I hear ya. Mine has thinned a LOT in the front and on top, and it’s super annoying, especially when the rest of my head is clearly in “hair farmer” mode. Unfortunately, I think genetics pretty much trumps everything else. :-/

When I can, I leave my hair wrapped in a towel as long as possible to soak up the water. I’ve considered getting some of those water-sucker-upper hair turban thingies; I wonder how well they work.

        1. admin December 22, 2010 at 11:55 pm

I used to have really thick hair, and around 9th grade all of a sudden it went to shit.

  8. princessgeek December 22, 2010 at 11:54 pm

You look so beautiful! Of course, you have always been lovely. I do like the hair, and sometimes thinning happens with weight loss, if that is the case, it will come back. 😀

    1. admin December 22, 2010 at 11:57 pm

Unfortunately, my hair was really thin before I started losing weight, so I don’t think it’s related. However, I do have suspected PCOS so losing weight might help alleviate the hair loss symptoms if that’s the cause.

      And thank you! 🙂

  9. xaotica December 23, 2010 at 2:25 am

this is one of those grass-is-always-greener things, but i have extremely thick hair. every stylist comments “my god, you have a lot of hair” or some variation when they cut it for the first time. unfortunately, i tend to like very layered, asymmetrical styles… which only work on thin hair. even when people try to cut them into my hair, it’s too thick for them to show up, and a week later it’s grown out so much that it looks like a shapeless blob. so i’ve often put “i wish i had thin hair and could have all those cool haircuts” in the same category as “if i was a size 4, i’d wear skintight dresses all the time”

i’m sort of obsessed with changing my hair monthly though which results in less available styles ;(

    1. admin December 23, 2010 at 10:34 pm

hahaha, trade? I would give so much to not be able to see my scalp through my hair.

      1. xaotica December 23, 2010 at 10:55 pm

here’s some examples of the sort of things i would like to do but they just don’t work cuz my hair is too thick:

i know, you have to kinda already want to be doing weird crap with your hair. *grin* but there’s all kinds of really cool haircuts for thinner hair…

I went to a store today, couldn’t even get in the parking lot, and remembered that since I’m off work this week I can go tomorrow morning. Instead of the dino kit for my BFF I got her a Captain American Fangirl Starter Kit, with a bank (for saving for the movie), an action figure, and some comics :B

    1. admin December 23, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Nice, sounds like you have a lucky bff! 🙂

  11. prdct December 23, 2010 at 4:33 pm

    very cute!

      Thank you!

  12. pikefish December 23, 2010 at 8:37 pm

thank you! thank you for this post. you made me smile and chuckle a bit! I adore your haircut!!!! and really? from this pic, it looks like you’re a normal, healthy weight! you don’t need to lose a thing!!!

the mall! ha! the mall in the armpit of Michigan has “family friendly” hours. hours in which kids of any age are not allowed in the mall without a parent. lots of problems with fights between kids who either rode the bus or were dropped by their parents for the evening. good times.

    1. admin December 23, 2010 at 10:37 pm

I have lost ~40 pounds since July and according to BMI (not sure how much I buy into that standard because it doesn’t take frame size, muscle, etc into account) I have just passed the threshold from ‘obese’ into ‘overweight’–according to the charts I’ve got another 27 pounds to lose in order to be classified as a normal weight for my height. I dunno if I’ll get there but I’m trying! 🙂

  13. technophobe1975 December 23, 2010 at 10:19 pm

I pity anyone who works in a store this time of year – the Christmas spirit does not seem to extend to the shoppers.

    1. admin December 23, 2010 at 10:40 pm

No, it often doesn’t, and I don’t get that attitude. “Good will toward men…except those helping me pick out a gift for the people I love. Fuck those guys in the eye. I think I’ll yell at them a little for good measure.”

  14. lady_sotha December 23, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Sexy pic hon! You are looking gorgeous! Jason is one lucky dude. =-)
